Teeth Whitening

Bright and beautiful teeth reflect confidence, youth and good health. A survey conducted by a cosmetic dentistry organization showed that Americans believe a good-looking smile can help in career growth. When asked about what changes people expected in their smile, many answered that they wanted their teeth to look brighter. Hence there is no surprise why tooth whitening is the most commonly preferred cosmetic procedures in dentistry. It is quick, it is effective and it is safe when performed by an experienced dental professional like Dr. Bertha O Alarcon. The treatment takes a single visit and patients can walk out happily with bright teeth. Meet our dentist at our Cudahy office for a tooth whitening process.

Tooth discoloration

The natural color of teeth depends on the thickness of enamel, oral hygiene, genetics and dental health. Staining occurs when the teeth are exposed to dark colored external agents. Wine, coffee, tea and cola can contribute greatly to tooth staining. The pigments of these dark colored fluids collect in the porous enamel layer and mask the color of teeth making them dull and uninteresting. Tooth whitening can help clear stain and brighten the teeth. It increases a person's self-confidence and leaving them with more reasons to smile.

Types of discoloration

Tooth discoloration is broadly classified into two types. Intrinsic discoloration occurs due to darkening of the inside of tooth. Medicines that contain tetracycline are known to discolor teeth in this manner. Extrinsic discoloration is staining of teeth due to smoking, consumption of dark-colored fluids like cola, wine, coffee and tea.

Tooth whitening process

The teeth should be free from decay in order to be suitable for whitening. Our dentist firstly checks for signs of decay. Necessary steps are taken to cure the decay before going ahead with whitening. Professional cleaning may precede teeth whitening process. Pictures of teeth are taken and we gauge the color shade of teeth using shade scale. The teeth are dried and a protective gel is applied over the gums. The whitening agent, normally hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is applied over teeth. A special light may be shined over teeth so that it accelerates oxidation process through which stain is cleared from enamel layer. Pictures of teeth are taken after the treatment to show the difference in the color shade. Patients are informed about how to protect the brightness of teeth.
